From Comfort to Unified: A Smarter HMI Choice

From Comfort to Unified: A Smarter HMI Choice

At AG Controls, we support our clients with complete automation solutions — from electrical design and panel assembly through to PLC, HMI, and servo motion programming, all the way to on-site commissioning. Our latest project for a long-term customer is a great example of how we bring these disciplines together to deliver a modern, sustainable control system architecture.

For this application we are integrating nine servo drives and six operator interface panels, all tied into a fully engineered solution developed in TIA Portal. During the design phase, Siemens advised us that this project would benefit from moving to their Unified Panel range rather than the long-established Comfort Panels. It’s remarkable how quickly technology evolves — Comfort Panels felt like the “new generation” not long ago, and now they are steadily being replaced by Unified across the industry.

Our Full-Scope Engineering Approach

This project represents the full breadth of what AG Controls provides:

– Electrical design of the control architecture

– Panel build and assembly carried out to industry standards

– PLC software development

– HMI screen creation for efficient and intuitive operation

– Servo motion programming for high-precision control

– Testing, commissioning, and on-site integration

For our clients, this means one partner responsible for the complete solution — no hand-offs, no mismatched expectations, and no compromises in quality.

Why Unified Panels?

Siemens Unified Panels were introduced as the next step in HMI technology, offering:

– Higher performance and faster response times

– A modern, web-based visualisation engine

– Improved scalability across panel sizes

– Future-proof compatibility with upcoming TIA Portal releases

– A longer lifecycle and better long-term support

Like many new platforms, Unified Panels had their teething problems when they first arrived. Early adopters across the industry reported stability issues, limited features, and firmware maturity challenges. However, Siemens has continued to refine the platform, and today Unified Panels have become a robust, reliable, and increasingly standard choice for new installations.

We are now seeing more and more of them in production environments, and for this project they provide the performance and lifecycle advantages needed to support the client’s long-term strategy.

System Overview

The solution we are delivering includes:

– 9 servo drives integrated through a coordinated motion architecture

– 6 Siemens Unified HMI panels offering consistent visualisation at multiple operator stations

– Modular PLC hardware designed for reliability and maintainability

– Advanced diagnostics and remote support capability

– Full software integration within TIA Portal

This creates a clean, scalable system structure where motion, safety, HMI, and PLC logic work together naturally.

From Design to Commissioning

Our process for this project included:

  1. Requirements analysis and defining performance needs
  2. Electrical design and hardware selection
  3. Panel assembly and quality checks
  4. PLC, HMI, and servo programming
  5. Unified Panel visualisation and interaction design
  6. Factory testing to ensure smooth deployment
  7. On-site commissioning and optimisation

Because each step is handled by our engineering team, we can ensure traceability, consistent quality, and fast problem resolution.

Benefits for the Client

By transitioning to Unified Panels and a modern control architecture, the client benefits from:

– Long-term platform stability and support

– Faster HMI performance and a more modern user interface

– Better diagnostics for reduced downtime

– A scalable architecture ready for future expansion

– Reduced risk of hardware obsolescence

This ensures not only a smooth commissioning today, but also a reliable system lifecycle for years to come.

Looking Ahead

As Siemens moves increasingly toward Unified technology, AG Controls remains committed to guiding our customers through this transition — ensuring they get a solution that is modern, supported, and engineered with long-term reliability in mind.

This project is now progressing toward testing and commissioning, and we look forward to seeing it fully operational in the coming weeks.

If your business is looking for a partner capable of delivering complete automation solutions — from schematics to commissioning — AG Controls is ready to support you every step of the way.
